| Description: | Sleeping
Princess Trail. According
to Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails, This is a nasty, dangerous
trail that should be driven with at least two other vehicles. Besides
an array of challenging rock obstacles, the road climbs over 2,000 feet
through the heart of the Black Mountains. Much of the road is loose, steep
gravel. One spot, along the edge of a narrow shelf, requires a sharp inside
turn. As your vechicle rounds the bend, your rear inside tire drops into
a gravelly low spot. Power is required at just the right time to reduce
the possibility of going over the edge. |
| Rating: | Difficult – Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails |
| Alternates: |
There
are three alternative trails which are not as difficult and very scenic. |
| Duration: | The trail can be completed in 4 – 5 hours under ideal conditions. A group of six took 7 hours with several vehicles returning for mechanical problems. |
| Time: | 9:00am |
| Location: | We will meet at the north end of the launch ramp parking lot adjacent to the Riverside Hotel. This is on Casino Drive just prior to making a right hand turn to cross the river. If you go over the bridge to Arizona you’ve gone too far. Turn around and come back. |
| Camping: | There are many places to camp. There is camping at Katherine’s Landing. The Riverside Hotel has a nice RV park across from the hotel. There is also a campground on the River Cut-off road. |
| Additional Information: | We have never
run any of these trails so this is truly an exploratory experience. Ron Weber, who has a home at Katherine’s Landing
has graciously agreed to assist. It
should be a fun weekend. Hope
to see you there. |
