As
anyone who has ever driven off road will tell you, sometimes you
just can't keep the vehicle from having fun. Bill Smith ended up
with a flat tire along the morning trail. Jesse and Travis both
tried to get Bill over the CB to warn him of the flat. By the time
that Bill stopped his vehicle the tire was non-repairable, so
Travis and Frank Hayes stayed back and helped him change his tire.
Bill's child had to be put in another vehicle so that they could
take him back for lunch. Our passenger was the PacBell rep and he
stayed back to tape video of the tire change. He was totally in
awe of how the Dirt Devils stick together and help each other out.
Bill™s luck changed the next day, however, and he didn't even
know it. We
had a raffle the next day for all the people involved and Bill won
a set of lights with wiring and a switch. On Sunday, Cheryl and
Heather came up with their kids. Larry Lesher came up to lend
support as well. On Sunday the Dirt Devils were supported by
Cheryl May, Heather Thomas, myself, Beth Kako, Sandy Graham, and
Connie Sims. The girls' run was a little more mellow, because the
volunteers decided that we should not take the bypasses along the
road. The girls seemed to enjoy themselves quite a bit. This year
the children were much more talkative, which made it more fun. The
girls on the morning adventure were very funny. One girl got on
the CB after spotting a lizard yelling "I saw an Iguana! I
saw an Iguana!" It was really funny. A boy on Saturday was
asking his friends if they saw any monkeys! Lunchtime was pretty
nice as well. We had hamburgers and hot dogs BBQ chips, beans, and
several flavors of ice cream to choose from. The children seemed
to especially like the ice cream. One of the volunteers went
around with a fire fighting water bag (kind of like a really big
mist sprayer) and sprayed a mist of water around to cool things
off. It was extremely hot out and shade was a scarce commodity. I
know, because I came home with a bit of a sunburn. Well, this
story is not over yet. After the day was done on Sunday, we were
surprised with a raffle. They came by and had us take tickets for
participating as drivers. They
also had us take tickets for a separate raffle for just being
there, and they had the children take tickets for a children's
raffle as well. Dean won the grand prize "Mouthwash." I
have a feeling everyone was envious of Dean that day. Miranda
Thomas won a Teddy Bear and was really happy about that. Mitchell
Thomas won a bag of goodies and seemed to be quite excited about
it. Amanda and Eric May won a bag of goodies and Amanda also won a
Teddy Bear. The children were all excited about their prizes. They
then had the raffle for the drivers (and you did not have to be
present for this one, because you put your name and phone number
on the back of the ticket). Well, Bill Smith's luck changed even
though he wasn't there and he won a really nice set of lights with
the wiring and switch to put it all together. I bet you think
that's it, huh? Well, it still wasn't over.
After
the various raffles, they had us line up and gave us
a bag to put goodies in. We all got t-shirts and different things
that were donated for the KOPL program. Many thanks go out to all
of the sponsors for making this happen, and especially to the OHV
volunteer program, the Police Action League, and the YMCA. As a
result of their hard work, I do believe that everyone had a great
time at KOPL this year. As we left to go to the market before
going home, we saw Lee (Carwash) pulled over to the side of the
road with two fishing poles. We asked him if he was planning on
having fish for supper and he stated "Yes, even if I have to
catch them at Albertson's.
