We
camped at East Flats overflow area near Jenks lake on Friday and Saturday
nights. The weather was nice - about 80 degrees during the day and about
50 at night. Unfortunately, the only Dirt Devil that showed up was Bill
and
Joyce Hammond
who came up for the day. I also had a member of the
Riverside
4-Wheelers (Ed Dahl) run the trail with us in his Cherokee. Each of us had
mechanical troubles on this trip. My radiator dumped a lot of water and
then decided to heat up the engine. After I filled it back up, I had no
more troubles. My friend Ed had some trouble with an intermittent starter
relay. We shorted the wires and got him running. Bills showroom 'new' jeep
vapor locked (or else his fuel pump is on the blink) on part of the trail.
Nothing earth shattering, we all made it back fine. We did an extended
part of the trail that I don't normally do...it was fun to try some
different obstacles.
I
thought I would see some of the Gadzuks on the trail since this was their
weekend to run the Onyx summit trail, but we didn't see anybody!!!
I
did talk to Greg Hoffman? the ranger on my CB, but never saw him. I think
he was on the opposite side of the mountain so we missed him.
We
got back to camp at about
4:00 pm
, and after Bill and Joyce said their goodbyes, we cooked dinner and
looked at the stars with a telescope.
On
Sunday we scouted for some new trails near Jenks lake and didn't find too
much. That side of the mountain would be a super ride if there were a road
up there.
