Little Rubicon, February 1999

By Larry & Margie Williams

It was early morning and dark outside with the treat of rain still in the air, along with some fog, but the day was young. We started out at 6:00 a.m. meeting Bill, Joyce, Craig and his wife in Brea to caravan out to Cabazon-Indio for an exciting day of "off-roading" for our "little Rubicon" club run with Kory and Joann. Along the way we met up with Quinn and the rest of the group on the freeway. How could you miss the Dirt Devils? After stopping I Cabazon, with some of the group devouring a huge breakfast...now full and happy, we all headed out for Kory’s place in a little fog with Macgyver leading the pack. As a club, we still need to work harder on "staying together" when caravaning and watching for the vehicle behind us. Several of our group apparently lost radio contact and didn’t make it to the gas station together and had to find their own way to Kory’s. If necessary, we need to pull over and "wait" to be certain everyone is together at all times.

By the way Kory, your directions were great and we loved your "pink rocks". Good Job! Upon arriving, Kory greeted us with all his wonderful big happy smile and much hospitality. Camp was then set up for those who were spending the night on his family’s property. The weather and sky cleared and it was a great day with twelve vehicles on their way. The run was terrific, lots of fun and what a beautiful sights the canyon and colors were. We collected several very colorful rocks while in the canyon where we all enjoyed lunch. The day was much to short.

Kory was a fabulous "trail leader" and both his parents joined us on the run with his Dad there to help out spotting us through many of the difficult area’s. we encountered several exciting challenges climbing rocks throughout the day and also a few "squeezes" for those more daring.

During the day, Larry & I were anxiously awaiting the birth of our second Grandchild. We were on "pins and needles" the entire day, hoping the baby would wait for us to arrive home, which was the case. Being Grandparents is so much fun! Needless to say, Jay our son, and Donna our daughter-in-law, were not able to join us on our fun-filled run for the day. Three days later on February 9, 1999 at 3:45 a.m. we were very excited to be blessed to witness to witness the birth of Grandson #2, Kyle Lawrence Williams 7 lbs., 14 oz. Everyone is doing great…. Congratulations Jay and Donna, Nathan too!

After we finished the run and said all our good-byes we headed for home, while some of group spent the night camping at Kory’s for run #2 on Sunday. Such hospitality! A great day was had by all. Let’s do it again! Thank you Kory and our many thanks to your parents too.
