John Bull Trail, Big Bear, July 1998

By David "Tin Man" Elliott

The run started a little late, we managed to get West Coast Jeep to let us by, thanks go out to Dean Kako for that. They were doing trail maintenance on their adopt-a-trail Gold Mountain. It was a hot day, the cloud cover helped some, but we still had three vehicles overheat. A lot of club members pitched in and helped the wounded, drain and fill, etc. After we finished Gold Mountain trail we stopped for lunch on the way to John Bull. Terra Del Sol was on the way to John Bull as well. To avoid getting separated we let them by, after lunch we proceeded to the trailhead. About ten minutes into the run our trail gunner, Shawn radioed in the Terra Del Sol was behind us! Guess their leader did not do a pre run and lead his club the long way. Our next break came by way of a bent front spring. The driver was towed to an open area and a great crew, engineered by Quinn "Macgyver" Thomas got it bent back into place. The driver was able to finish the run under his own power. While stopped for our repair, Terra Del Sol passed us again. They took some kidding from us on that! After getting to the end of the trail we hit a hilly play area, where some could test their abilities. The run ended at that point and the campers went left to Big Pine Flats and Dean led the rest of the group into town for pizza and party. Good Run.
