At High Desert Round-up this
year, the Dirt Devils hosted two runs, the Devil’s Loop and the Blue Moon. The
Blue Moon, led by Ken "Ditch" Krieger, run was one intended for SUVs
as well as drivers who were new to the off roading experience. There ended up
being a total of 23 vehicles on this run, approximately half of which were Dirt
Devils. Of the non-member participants, there was a good mix of vehicles and
drivers. driving vehicles such as a new Cherokee and a new Ford Expedition. In
addition, there were some other drivers who had a wider range of knowledge with
older vehicles.
The run left from the camp
ground, went up Stoddard Wells Road and turned into a wash and started playing
among the hills. During the beginning it was joined by an additional six
vehicles who had accidentally gotten onto the Devil’s Loop run and decided
that wasn't a good idea. Three of the vehicles joined about 45 minutes late
causing a couple of the vehicles to have backtrack to meet up with them.
The morning went well with only
minor mishaps. The Expedition lost 4-wheel drive for a short time, but was later
discovered to have been the result of children’s wandering fingers. The group
met up with a tortoise that delayed them for a short time while it meandered
across the trail. The biggest excitement seemed to occur when a dog went
missing, but was soon discovered a little ways back.
Lunch was eaten at Slash-X and
those wishing to continue went for more fun. Several vehicles decided not to
join the afternoon portion as it was considerably more difficult, bringing the
group down by about half. The afternoon was spent with several hill climbs and
rock crawls going through portions of the Devil’s Loop, which everyone
enjoyed.
The run seemed to be a success. Hopefully the Dirt Devil’s
will be able to host it again next year.
