ADOPT-A-TRAIL RUN

By Brian Pawlak

On Sunday, November 22, a few of us got together for a quick run of the Club trail. At 7:00 my family met with John Strege at McDonalds at the 10 fwy and Sierra soon to be joined by Travis and Lisa, and Don Fontana. I work with Don who belongs to the Riverside Ruff Riders. We left at 7:30, and aired down at Fisherman’s camp trailhead, at the top of the trail. We picked up a fair amount of trash along the way and stopped after the waterfall section. We took a halfhearted look for the guzzler that is supposed to be below the cement tank. A 2 foot by 4 foot cement holding tank was found but I don’t think it was the guzzler. Thought it would be fun to look anyway.

None of us rolled it at the waterfall section, but someone’s window was on the trail at the top. We didn’t bring a suitable container to remove it, so I presume it’s still there. We’ll have to pick it up next time. Don went back up to his club trail, 3N93 - Holcolmb Creek, after crossing the creek twice at T6 when we got there. On Monday He told me that he helped an (Explorer/Bronco II/Blazer/They all look the same to Him) off the waterfall on his way back up. Apparently they were half way down the big rock and stopped when they were teetering on two wheels , opposite front and rear. The ‘two big men’ told Don they were afraid to open the door to get out for fear of rolling it. He assured them there tires were only a few inches off the ground and had them back up, turn around, and spotted them all the way to the top of the trail. Don has a Sahara edition YJ with 33’s, 4:56 gears, one Detroit, one ARB, 4" of lift and a Warn 9000I winch.

The T6 crossing is hardened. It’s almost possible to keep the diffs dry with 33’s if you cross slowly. A heavy felt liner was laid down below approximately 12" sq. by 2" thick pavers held together by about 1/8 " steel cables, probably stainless steel. The pavers go straight from the Arrowhead side of the trail to the "Big Rock" on the opposite sandy shore. The gas tank bashing rock in the creek is gone, but most all the other rocks at the crossing are the same as they were. The road from Arrowhead to the T6 crossing was unchanged at the time of our run.

We ate lunch at a day use area. Then we ran some trails with Travis and Lisa leading, and had some fun crawling over rocks at the summit of 2N27Y. My Cherokee was running a little hot on a few of the hills we climbed. Later I found that I forgot to plug in the wires to the fan last time it was removed.

We went to the Ranger station on Hwy 18 and logged in our Adopt-a-Trail run. We had fun on the trails and the weather was clear and cool. At 3:00 we headed home.

See you on the next run.

Brian, Beth, Jeremy and Alexis
