Some time ago, Rick Russell who organized the OHV Volunteer
Program asked me if the Dirt Devils would be interested in helping out some
weekend on the construction of the building at North Shore. I said I don’t see
why they would, but I’ll ask anyway. Sure enough it became a club project to
donate some time back to San Bernardino National Forest. So on August 10th, Andy
with Pete, Quinn and Heather, Corey and Dana, Dean, Tom Benight, Tom Tammone,
Reynaldo, and I, of course met at the old standby - "Denny’s" for
breakfast, and left there at 7:55 a.m. to go to Arrowhead. A good orientation at
8:40 by Tom, the carpenter for the National Forest, made us feel like we
belonged. He gave us our assignments and we went to work.
There seemed to be a lot of supervisors, if you’re confused
about the players, I’ll run down the list quickly and maybe it’ll make
sense. Adela, who pointed us in the general direction and worked along side of
us is a volunteer coordinator whose job it is to make sure the building gets
built. She also rough designed the bunkhouse. Ron Brayton, who kept busy on the
forklift and saw is a seasonal F.S. Level 2. We met Scott who also is a seasonal
F.S. and is assigned to the volunteer program to work with us on patrols. Most
everyone on the roof were FS regulars assigned to get this building done. All
good people to know and work with. Rick Russell used up a lot of film on us to
publicize the Dirt Devils as a friendly, cooperative 4x4 club to the NF Efforts.
WE MADE THE CLUB LOOK GOOD! Our efforts were praised and appreciated for the
progress that was made. We totaled 75 hours of work, we put siding up on three
walls, and it looks good. Our goal is to lock it up by snow time - it’ll be
close. In spite of all those bent nails it was fun and quite different.
After the building we went on a trail ride to check out our
potential adopt-a-trail. We ran it the easy way and it looks to be fun. Those
who could stay for the BBQ when we got back, enjoyed the best tasting hamburgers
ever. We were hungry and they fed us well to show their appreciation. I’ll go
back just for the BBQ.
Rick,
Adela, and the National Forest sends their best wishes
along with their appreciation to the club. I think we are a welcomed club in the
National Forest anytime. We’re building a good name and reputation. Keep up
the great work!

"BUILDING CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:
"Building construction is moving
along! Recently Ken Herbert arranged to have is 4-wheel Drive Club, THE DIRT
DEVILS come out and help us. On this particular weekend we had about 20
volunteers, Dirt Devils, and OHV Seasonals working. We separated into four crews
and tackled different areas of the building. The siding is about 85% complete on
the west, 70% on the south and 50% on the north side of the building. Doors and
windows have been installed . . . Thanks to Ken Herbert for bringing his gang
up. After working they went on a trail ride, then we had a BBQ and fed them all.
Thank you Dirt Devils. . ."
